Our Unwavering Commitment to Advancing Racial Equity and Justice

The recent Supreme Court decision on Affirmative Action dismisses the systemic barriers faced by students of color in accessing higher education and upholds a false narrative that Affirmative Action programs give unqualified people access to jobs and educational opportunities that they do not deserve when the opposite is true. Affirmative Action programs were designed to rectify a discriminatory system that denied qualified individuals access to educational and job opportunities based on their race.

We must address the Supreme Court decision on head-on and reassert our unwavering commitment to advancing racial equity and justice in early childhood.

ECFC’s work is guided by key equity principles:

  1. Lifelong Learning: We continually challenge biases and assumptions through ongoing education.
  2. Racial Equity and Justice: Our priority is driving long-term systems change.
  3. Addressing Philanthropy’s Complicity: We confront the historical role of philanthropy in perpetuating racist policies and systems in early childhood.
  4. Amplifying Silenced Voices: We uplift marginalized voices and center their experiences.
  5. Sharing Power: We collaborate with field partners, advocates, grantees, and impacted communities to redistribute and share power.
  6. Dismantling Disparities: Our active efforts focus on dismantling disparities and injustices faced by Black and Indigenous communities.
  7. Asset-Based Approach: We recognize and leverage the strengths and assets within these communities to foster thriving.
  8. Intersectional Advocacy: We adopt an intersectional approach to advance various forms of justice, including racial, disability, environmental, and economic justice.

ECFC is collaborating with the United Philanthropy Forum and the Association of Black Foundation Executives (ABFE) as they develop a comprehensive strategy and recommendations to support nonprofits engaged in race-explicit work. ECFC will also convene our members to foster discussions about the ramifications and explore ways to advance our shared commitments.

In the face of setbacks, we stand firm in our pursuit of an equitable early childhood landscape. Let us remain steadfast in upholding these principles and intensify our efforts to drive racial equity and justice in early childhood. Together, we can create enduring change and ensure that every child has equal access to quality education and opportunities for a brighter future.
