Community Change, Under 3 DC
Highlights
SPACEs in Action in Washington, DC, a co-lead of the Under 3 DC Coalition, engages early educators and parents to tell their stories before the DC Council. This strategy helped win a tax on high income earners starting in 2021 that is subsequently generating $75 million a year to raise early educator salaries. In 2022, SPACEs developed implementation strategies. They organized child care centers and family child care homes to make sure individuals could access the new funding, and to have input into implementation decisions for a new wage enhancement structure that will be distributed through grants to centers and family child care providers. SPACEs produced videos for social media and YouTube featuring early educators saying what the raise meant to their families and how to sign up. In 2022, the D.C. Council extended access to health insurance for the workforce––including undocumented workers.
