BUILD Initiative Celebrates 20 Years of Early Childhood Leadership

ECFC congratulates BUILD Initiative on 20 years of leadership in building early childhood systems to offer support to young children and their families in the context of strong communities.

Funded initially by fourteen ECFC member foundations, many of whom continue to engage as funding partners, BUILD was created in 2002 to help state leaders develop comprehensive, racially equitable systems of programs, policies and services that address the needs of the whole child and their families.

From the beginning, BUILD has been at the forefront of spreading the message that learning begins at birth (or before) and that positive early childhood experiences require health, mental health, and family support, as well as nurturing early care and education.

As a model of public-private partnership, BUILD has been pivotal in assembling interdisciplinary coalitions toward a shared vision, attracting brilliant staff and partners across public and private sectors, and pioneering ways to work across policy, technical assistance, and implementation.  BUILD has shown us how to learn and evolve as we gain a better understanding of the forces, narrow and broad, that shape the landscape for families.

From the longstanding early childhood systems workgroup that continuously deepened our vision for early childhood systems to the strong evolution toward embedding equity in our work, BUILD is a model for all of us.

On behalf of ECFC’s leadership and our foundation members at the local, state, and national levels, we thank BUILD Initiative for 20 years of leadership. As ECFC celebrates our 30th anniversary, we look forward to more decades of work together.
